Our Services

Tiaki Akoako offers a unique suite of kaupapa Māori-aligned services that centre Indigenous perspectives, foster cultural capability, and respond to pressing digital, social, and organisational challenges. All services are delivered with a strong foundation in tikanga Māori, relational engagement, and trauma-informed practice. Our work spans across Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia, with services inclusive of Māori, Pacific, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Each service is co-designed with community partners, grounded in Te Ao Māori and Indigenous worldviews, and facilitated by experienced trainers, advisors, and academics. We invite collaboration with education providers, community organisations, and public institutions across Aotearoa and Australia to uplift Indigenous self-determination, equity, and wellbeing.

What we offer:

1. Te Tiriti o Waitangi Training & Organisational Embedding

We provide in-depth Te Tiriti training and practical embedment strategies to:

  • YMCA National and affiliated branches throughout Aotearoa

  • Educational institutions

  • Corporates such as Fulton Hogan

  • Charitable and community-based organisations

  • Government and non-government entities seeking bicultural transformation

Our approach is relational and future-focused, ensuring that Treaty principles are not only understood but lived across all levels of an organisation. We support organisations to meet their obligations and responsibilities in a way that is responsive to Aotearoa’s changing demographics and evolving equity landscape.

2. Digital Safety, Misinformation & Disinformation Workshops

Our signature "Ask an Aunty" and "Ask a Niece" workshops are delivered in collaboration with youth education organisations, community leaders, and schools. These programmes build critical thinking and digital literacy skills to combat:

  • Misinformation and disinformation online

  • Algorithmic bias and the impact of AI

  • Online radicalisation and extremist content

Workshops are tailored for youth (rangatahi, Pasifika, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander), intergenerational groups, and kaumātua, ensuring culturally relevant engagement. These programs foster resilience, enhance digital wellbeing, and empower communities to navigate the online world safely.

3. Indigenous Perspectives in Intelligence, Security, and Counter-Terrorism

We provide academic, policy, and sector-based engagement on:

  • Indigenous approaches to national security and counter-terrorism

  • Challenging surveillance-based models that marginalise Indigenous communities

  • Culturally grounded intelligence and prevention strategies informed by whakapapa, kinship, and collective security principles

Through keynotes, roundtables, and policy advisory, we work across jurisdictions to reshape global and national security discourse in ways that centre Indigenous knowledge systems and relational frameworks.

4. Trauma-Informed Care & Behavioural Management Training

We offer professional training in trauma-informed and culturally responsive behaviour management, designed for:

  • Educators, youth workers, health professionals, and frontline staff

  • Those working with vulnerable tamariki, rangatahi, and communities affected by trauma

Training integrates clinical, Indigenous, and practical knowledge with modules on:

  • De-escalation techniques and managing challenging behaviours

  • Supporting Māori, Pacific, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tamariki

  • Creating safe, inclusive, and healing-centred environments
